You stop and observe the forest troll from a safe distance evaluating it as a foe
I think the trick's that you made someone proud.

The troll is most definitely a foe!

You move slightly closer and try to assess weather you could defeat the troll in single combat or if not weather there is any exploitable terrain to lay a trap in so that you could defeat this foe.

You check your bags:
You have:
-Iron sword equipped
-Small wooden shield equipped
-Iron armor equipped

You have nothing in your inventory except 100 gold

It might be possible to defeat the troll in single combat as you have no other weapons besides a sword to fight the troll.

I rp-whisper a guildie through my hearthstone and ask if he can just give me a ride to my destination (as clearly pointed out on Cartographer) in his mechano-hog and perhaps loan me some gold so I don't have to slog this out with just a backpack and a rusty shortsword.

(Just trying to keep it real.)

You do not have a hearthstone in your inventory. You are not even sure what a hearthstone is or even a mechano-hog.

Although you do think about your guildies back home who you left to go on this journey. Maybe when you finish you can go visit them and tell your tales.

You ponder upon the Troll´s intentions, and why it´s chosen to loiter in your path. With Trolls typically being Chaotic Evil, you feel reasonably justified in your decision to kill it. However, you´re not sure whether or not you could defeat it in a fair fight. Despite your heavy armor, you try to you sneak up behind the Forest Troll, and perform a Sneak Attack!

Success! Your Sneak Attack directly hits the Forest Troll!

The Forest Troll falls to the ground and dies.

You find a large battle axe on the troll's body (which he hadn't been carrying until he died somehow). You have to choose between your sword and shield or a slow 2handed battle axe.

You pick up the large battle axe that magically appeared.
*Large Battle-Axe has been added to your inventory*
You decide to keep with your sword and shield for now but you hold on to the axe in your inventory.

Having valiantly defeat the troll (and gained half a level worth of experience!), you start to make your way towards Mrs. Muffins cottage. The innkeeper said it was located in a small clearing in the woods, roughly three hourglasses away. Taking a quick glance at the sun, you realize you don´t have much time till nightfall. Two hourglasses at the most. These woods are reputed to be quite dangerous in the dark, so speed is of the essence.

Edit: Curse you, Lightbeard
