WTF is Sucker Punch?

O.K. here is my basic take away from the movie, sans spoilers:

The movie is good, total nerd bait that delivers to some extent, it is worth your hard earned monies. Lots of action, awesome cinematography, etc. The thing that really pulls it together is how the soundtrack is employed in the film. I can not stress this enough, the movie is good but the soundtrack is AWESOME!

TL;DR: Go see it

Bjork and Skunk Anansie you say?(Both featuring women who could easily make the "World" list of Celebrity Idol females and proceed to blow away most of the competition, you know...IMO and all that jazz)

I just got back from a mid-afternoon matinee.

I liked the movie it was fun. I mean what could be bad about 5 scantily clad babes kicking ass with swords, guns, battle mechs, aircraft and explosions ;p.

So there are 5 girls: The little blonde with the over active imagination, the pixie/elfish girl, her big overprotective sis, the cute asian girl, and Vanessa Hudgens providing some gratuitous shots of her ass. (I had not realized Ms Hudgens was in the movie till I saw moviephone unscripted just prior to heading to the theater).

I did enjoy the soundtrack, and thought it did work well with the plot elements throughout the movie. I wasn't always certain how all the fantasy action sequences corresponded what what going on in 'reality', but it was entertaining and fun.

So I saw this today. This is less a movie and more "Here's a blond in pigtails fighting samurai gargoyles."
The plot was ridiculous. The only good parts of the movie are honestly the 4 action scenes. Zack Snyder should stick to directing. Writing screenplay's is obviously not his talent.

That said, the action scenes were damn entertaining. He has a great feel for making a scene look like it jumped off a comic book page. But again, he needs someone ELSE writing his comic book. This was just him getting a sandbox and allowed to run wild on it. I LOVED 300 and Watchmen. I went into the movie knowing this would be a "bad" action flick. But omg, the Expendables had a better plot than this.

And yes, the girls handled their weapons like pros. I'd be really interested in hearing how they trained for their action scenes.

I personally haven't been a fan of his reviews. He just strikes me as a guy who intentionally goes against mainstream opinion just to be different rather than that being his actual opinion.

That being said in his review I wish he went into the negative aspects of the film and he did seem to overanalyze the point of it.

Ive been reading/watching movie bob for a while now, ever since i started watching the games reviewer yahzee.

I find Bob pretty spot on - at least for what my tastes in movies are.
A good indicator for me.

If a critic who generally shares your taste in movies likes a movie, then it's a good indicator that you will also like that movie.

The "big name" critics generally have valid criticisms if they like or dislike a movie. Get a few critics opinions and see what they all agree on as the best/worst points of the movie, then you'll generally have a good idea of whether or not it'll be to your tastes, without relying on "that one guy who always agrees with my opinion".

I usually go with rottentomatoes.com for movie reviews, since I can see one-line summaries of the critics' reviews, and read the full reviews if I want to. It also gives a metacritic type score for it.
