Question about the Batman film

Batman and Gordon had a choice. Reveal that Harvey Dent was the one that kidnapped Gordon's family and threatened to kill them, and in the process tear down all of the good Harvey had done for the city, or allow Batman to take the blame for both the kidnapping of Gordon's family and the death of Harvey, martyring Harvey and his ideals in the process in order to maintain the strength of the city. This in turn turns Batman into "The Dark Knight," the kind of hero they needed, one capable of sacrificing himself for the greater good at his own selfless expense.
