Re: Deus Ex
Sounds cool pretty cool for an FPS. Maybe I'll buy it if it's cheap enough. Might not be my type of game though.

It's not an FPS. It's an RPG with FPS-like combat system.

It's the videogame equivalent of the first Matrix movie: a perfect blend of dialogue, action and pure style.
A reckoning is not to be postponed indefinitely.

This really is one of the best games ever made, and it's as good today as it was 10 years ago.

So an FPSRPG.

Like the Mass Effect series, basically.

Re: Deus Ex
FPSRPG is a misnomer here, as it was a genre spawned as a direct result of games like Deus Ex and System Shock 2, which never managed to recapture what made the originals so good in the first place. Mass Effect is probably the closest that any game has come to recreating that magic, but even it's not as good. I don't know why Deus Ex is so good. Maybe the game designers back then were simply more talented, or less constricted by industry. Maybe it was the relative simplicity of the technology -- lacking complex physics engines and graphics -- that allowed the game to really become something special. Maybe it was just a fluke.
Calling Deus Ex an FPSRPG is like comparing Jar Jar Binks to Han Solo. It's like calling Frank Sinatra a pop singer. Yes, in both cases there's some technical ring of truth to things, but there's also very clearly a wildly different context.
I honestly doubt that we'll ever see a game as good, again. If you haven't played it, you're only doing yourself a disservice.

Deus Ex is like System Shock 2, but with other characters still alive! (And with a branching story-line involving the other characters, rather than being survival-based.
Both are amazing games, and I haven't really found any that live up to their tradition. BioShock tried, but it didn't really manage to pull it off.

Re: Deus Ex
I actually didn't mind Bioshock, it didn't feel like it was just trying to shoe-horn crappy RPG elements into what's really just an FPS. Too many games do that nowadays -- they take a good FPS, then add inventory management and sidequests, like those are the two crowning achievements of the RPG genre or something :\
Bioshock was just an FPS with a really good storyline to it. I can respect that. It wasn't the greatest game ever, but it wasn't necessarily trying to be. It was just doing its thing. Just Cause 2 was another game like that. Just solid, unpretentious gameplay that didn't try to overstep its bounds!

Re: Deus Ex
BioShock was hyped by its creators as the spiritual successor to SystemShock2 (which is also evident in the name!) If you followed all the chat they were giving during development you would have been as disappointed as me when it was released. It wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't as good as SystemShock2.

Re: Deus Ex
Bioshock felt like a standard FPS where you could shoot fire and shit.
Borderlands ius definitely underappreciated as an FPSRPG.

Re: Deus Ex
What, you guys didn't buy it on Steam when it was on offer for like 5 dollars for Deus Ex 1 and 2?
(I skipped it cause I own hard copies of both, though I'd prefer to pretend the 2nd one never existed)

Re: Deus Ex
Instead of slapping the FPSRPG tag on it, suffice to say that Deus Ex IS the genre. Many games have tried, few have come close, and none have matched that level of awesome.
