In NYC?

In NYC it would be cabbies and questionable streetside meat cart vendors.

Oh now what is this nonsense. :/

I always thought that the TV shows exaggerated the "lifestyle" in downtown NYC. Then I passed through there on a greyhound bus and had a 10 hour layover in Port Authority, NYC, from 2am to noon.

I can't decide whether or not I regret leaving the bus station. I do have stories to tell, though - well, really only one, but it was ... interesting.

Having to spend 10 hours in the Port Authority sounds like ass, but I really want to hear this story now...

Someone had stolen my CD player while I was on the bus, so I needed to find a store that sold them.

As I was leaving the bus terminal, there was a drunk homeless guy with a diabetic medic-alert bracelet who was in the middle of a heart attack. I picked up the payphone to call 911 (it was *47 or something like that in the Port Authority, but I digress), and the desk sergeant that answered hung up on me. So I called back, and they didn't hang up on me that time. Either way, it was pretty silly that they hung up on me in the first place. I waited with the guy until the paramedics arrived - no way in hell was I going to do CPR on him; he was quite literally foaming at the mouth.

So after the paramedics hauled him away, I left the terminal. I was wearing my Mickey Mouse letterman's jacket (a gift from my wife - Mickey and I share a birthday), and just as I walked out, a homeless woman started following me, rattling a paper coffee cup with some change in it, asking me if I had any spare change. I tried to ignore her, but have you ever played the game Assassin's Creed? Yeah, she was that annoying.

The streets were choked with cabbies, half of whom were leaning out of their windows to shout obscenities at other cars and people jaywalking across the street, and weirdly enough a couple passed me on the sidewalk going the opposite direction. The man, I shit you not, was wearing a tux complete with tails, top hat and monocle. The woman was wearing a fur coat. In NYC. At 3:30 in the morning. In Port Authority.

I had to walk 5 blocks to get to the drug store - on the first street corner was a pimp, who tried to get me to rent a date. Halfway through the block was a guy hawking knock-off Rolex watches, then on the second street corner was a drug dealer that tried to sell me a rock of crack. Third street corner was another pimp, then a drug dealer mid-way through the block. This pattern pretty much repeated itself over the 5 blocks, and come on... I was wearing a Mickey Mouse letterman's jacket! I highly doubt that I even looked like I was "in the market" for any of the services being offered.

Oh, the homeless woman with the paper cup was still following me, to boot.

So I get to the drug store, and they didn't even have portable CD players for sale. Color me unhappy. As I was walking back, some meat cart vendors were setting up, and I bought a mystery meat kebab. Best rat/pigeon/dog/cat I've ever tasted.

And apparently, homeless people don't have much to do - the chick was waiting for me outside the drugstore, and followed me all the way back to the bus terminal.

Yeah 10 hours around the Port Authority neighborhood is not the best example of the NYC "lifestyle". That'd be like visiting the death star and spending 10 hours in the trash compactor.

Well, the death star was kinda prone to exploding. At least there's a quick exit from the trash compactor area?

What I found amusing about Times Square is I remember as a kid going down there to do stuff like, get fake id's, buy "ninja stars" (that's wtf we called them back then damimt!) and generally be up to no good. After Disney took over...42nd I think? the whole place changed. Now the seedy elements are directly OFF of time square. I don't remember seeing much foolishness happen actually in timesquare now. Altho I'll admit, I haven't been there in years. I remember reading an article where they close it off to car traffic and set up chairs all over and I was all "WTF!!" Would be interesting to go visit it again.
