The admin on the server I play on tends to leave damage disabled, falling off a cliff and losing everything while building just gets entirely too annoying.

I think I'd be fine with the hunt down materials version of building things... IF they removed Creepers (or at least severely reduced their spawn rates...)

Creepers really aren't a big problem; just gotta make sure your base is well lit. Without Creepers, there's barely any risk vs reward in Minecraft. It's all just reward, and gets put aside in a week out of boredom.

Creepers still spawn in the light though, don't they?
I just keep them away by setting my base up a few blocks, so that creepers can't see me when I'm in the building.

Nothing hostile can spawn in the light. Creepers don't burn up in the light like zombies and skeletons, however. So you either have to get away from them and let them despawn or kill them.

Creepers are actually programmed to try and find a hiding spot and ambush you. (Around a corner, behind a door, etc.) If you suspect creepers are in the area, hit F3 to enter debug mode and you can see a mob ID above their (and any other mob's) head, even through walls.

I usually do this while I'm mining. It helps me find the natural caverns that usually have a good amount of resources. Of course this is dependent on the spawning of hostiles inside said caves.

Sorry about that, I had not been at home untill now. I've updated the server, but there has been a power outage, so new IP details as well.

This has happened to me more times than I care to recall. It's like a universal rule that once I have about 6 diamonds in my bag, a creeper comes, detonates, exposing a lava flow, which engulfs me and then proceeds to melt all my hard-mined gear/inventory.

I proceed to pokerface, shut down minecraft and not play it again for at least a week.
