Zero Mission was great. Sadly i lost the game and couldn't finish it.
Curse you!
How could he? =[
When I was younger I had I believe Super Mario World 2 or something for the GBA (it was the one with Yoshi). I got it played it for 2 hours having fun with Yoshi. Next day couldn't find it. With Zero Mission I got stuck at the part slightly after you get the screw attack I think. By time I found a guide it was lost.
Edit: I decided to check a box full of old video game stuff I've owned and managed to find my Final Fantasy 1 and 2 GBA game but no Metroid.

Try tidying up your house dude! Then you won't keep losing things.
Metroid is awesome, finished the old nes and snes version. Then 2 versions on the gcube, and even the wii offering. I agree with invis though, adding motion controls to a game like this will most likely ruin it.
The existing wii version (forget its name) was by far the weakest of the games. Playing with the point and click laser pointer just didn't feel the same. Those controls are great for Wii sports or for having a laugh with the family on some cute mario game but it just doesnt work on games like this.
I think they've ruined it and it's a very sad day

At least you lost it playing another good game. If anyone here skipped over Yoshi's Island when they were younger because it didn't look cool enough for you due to the crayony graphics I'd definitely recommend you give it a try now.Lightbeard wrote:When I was younger I had I believe Super Mario World 2 or something for the GBA (it was the one with Yoshi). I definitely disagree with you on that one. While the occasional motion control gimmicks they used for door controls and such were overdone, the overall controls were really good. It's the closest I've seen a console get to the keyboard + mouse controls a PC offers; it was enough for me to pick up the remakes of the first two Metroid Prime games as well just because the controls were that much more enjoyable to play with. It actually makes the second game enjoyable to play for me which is surprising as I absolutely loathe the "Oh yeah in this area you constantly take damage" gimmick it had going on.Giggitygoo wrote:The existing wii game (forget its name) was by far the weakest of the games. As for Other M, I'll see how it works out when the game releases over here which is Friday I think. It seems more gimmicky in that game though since the motion controls aren't a constant part of the gameplay, but maybe they worked it in well.

Each to their own. What really put me off massivly was when I read that when your in FPS mode you can't move, but only shoot.
Yeah, okay so I'm fighting a 300 foot tall red alien that shoots lasers at me from it's eyes and I can't move if I want to aim.
Anyway let me know what you think when you get it ...

To be fair though, if you are moving you might as well just fire in the general direction! Its pretty much impossible to both run and aim through sights carefully!
Goldeneye was the same iirc, and that was still an awesome game.

I won't argue with that. Legendary game!
However that was more for targeting distant enemies in that game as I recall.
With metroid I get a horrible feeling every boss is going to be the same:
* Dodge several hundred attacks using the the traditional controls and blast it enough so it falls over / opens up / farts on you ... what ever ...
* Quickly change control methods and blast it in the big orange glowy bits.
* Repeat ...
I've been wrong about games before though, and I kind of hope I am wrong about this if I'm honest because metriod was also legendary!!
I can't help wishing they had stuck to the 3D enviroment & traditional pad controls though. I would give them a blank cheque for more of that!

Or it might be for things like the grappling beam, the X-ray scanner etc?
I remember in Zelda:Ocarina of time you only really used first person aiming view out of combat for getting around, in combat you never needed to thanks to Z-targeting. Hunting for those pesky golden skulltullas etc.
It depends how they implement it, I do agree that taking you into first person view during a boss fight is probably a bad idea. Metroid boss fights should all be about dodging, jumping and firing missiles everywhere!
If you only use first person for exploration / secret finding it'll be fine.

You mostly use first person for exploring and secret finding, and the control is pretty intuitive - point the wiimote at the screen and switch to first person. Hold it "traditional style" and you're in third person running and gunning.
Edit to add: Or if you want to lock on with missiles.

Whooooooosh
To add content: mine should be sitting on my doorstep when I get home. I'm just glad they did it (mostly) in 2D. I didn't think the Prime games were bad, but I definitely didn't prefer them over the 2D games.

Oh God I remember the bomb-jumping...getting alllllmost to where you need to go, messing up the rhythm, and falling several screens back down to whatever quasi-bottomless pit

Have you seen the beyond human bomb jumping tricks they pull off in Super Metroid runs? Last time I checked a few years ago the record for a non glitch low item speed run was 12% in just under an hour, I think.

so I have played a few hours of Other M and concluded I am awful at Metroid games. I went back and forth through this long ass sequence of rooms like 3 times before I realized that I should go into first person to see that the wall I was "stuck" at was missile-able.

Also has anyone seen any screenshots from the opening sequence of the game because Zero Suit Samus has, to use an entirely appropriate internet meme, dat ass.

There was some feminist hype talking about the objectification of an otherwise "flavorful, mystic, serious character"

Well they definitely removed the "mystic" part. From her inner monologue so far in the game she feels like an actual person now... a whiny emo person, to be sure, but a person. I don't know if this is good or bad in comparison to her previous sort of implacable juggernaut persona.
