Re: This is some COLD logic
There have been many, many times where the only thing stopping me from throttling someone else to death was that it's illegal, and I'd quite probably get caught.

If you use that excuse, it opens precedent for racism.
You don't want irish to be eliminated because they are more violent, do you?

We don't have to go that far, just need some way of identifying them. Like say green outfits with fancy green hats and a four-leaf clover somewhere.Snake-Aes wrote:Fivelives wrote:Or irish, with the resulting temper that comes with the breed. :p

I can't think of any crime I haven't done because of a deterrent of being caught. I don't commit crimes mostly because I don't like being mean to people.
I guess the fear of punishment motivation for being "good" is a deeply rooted Christian value.

Simpler than that. It's a primary instinct: Do shit and it hurts. You don't want the hurt, so you don't do shit.

I bet there are some though. Do you follow traffic signs and conventions? Do you use a designated driver rather than risk a DUI? Do you sell drugs? Do you wander around drunk and/or naked in public?
That's the reason I chose the weed example to demonstrate deterrents. Buying/smoking weed doesn't involve you being mean to anyone, but you likely avoid doing it (or at the least, are very discreet about it) because of the risk of being caught.

I never would have pegged theck as someone in favor of weed legalization.

Well I don't drink and drive because I don't think operating already lethal heavy machinery like a car with impaired reflexes is a good idea. If I killed someone you would always wonder if they would have lived if you hadn't had that second drink. I don't tend to drink anything and drive, and rarely drink a small amount and drive. Its not like the legal limit affects me at all.
As for weed etc, I am in favour of legalising all illegal drugs to some degree. (They should all be available to addicts legally at the least) but if they were legal I doubt I would want to take any.
Wondering around drunk in public is illegal I guess technically, but no-one is ever arrested for it so its not really working as a deterrent anyway.
I suppose the one thing I do to avoid punishment is slow down for the 10m around a speed camera, but I don't think counts since it doesn't affect my behaviour when not within 10m of a speed camera.
