How did they get up there?

The latest weaselry by the gold sellers, may Asmodai burn and blast them.

How did they get up there? I was standing around under the trade district
tree, and all 20-whatever level 1 warlocks logged in at precisely the same
moment; they were already in position. First they appeared standing on the
ground like everybody else, then they all logged off, and about 20 seconds
later they reappeared as you see them here spelling out some URL which I'm
not going to help them propagate.

One of the things the client program controls is character position. Their hacking program puts their character at coordinates X,Y,Z (which in the picture is unreachable by normal means) and the client sends it to the server. Server sends their location to all the other clients and you see them in their floating spots.

Someone posted somewhere, here or on mmo-champ probably, that they used one of the dance items to force them to dance out of sync and ruined the message.

Doesn't the wow client handle distance in the vertical plane in such a way that no matter how high they were they would still be affected by something like that, if you targeted the ground below them?

Never seen this myself else I would try it.

I'm (almost) certain stuff going on around players ignore vertical distance. E.g you can easily see mining nodes and fish pools when in dalaran while their distance is significantly further than maximum minimap range. I would assume it works the same way with stuff that forces players to dance or do other emotions.

Ah-hah. Thank you. (I would have thought the server would reject coordinates outside a certain envelope.)

I think there is some code which auto-detects blatant hacking, but as long as you keep your total velocity low you can go pretty much anywhere.

(IE, "lag out" and then reappear behind a wall, up a cliff etc)

If you tried to teleport around wintergrasp visiting all the mining nodes, I think you get spotted after a while.

I've innocently had it happen to me, when flying on your mount and lagging out walls etc don't always load in time before you fly through them, then when your client re-establishes contact with the server you find yourself trapped somewhere inaccessible.

Yeah, I saw that exact same thing on my server yesterday, identical to your pic and in the same location. The ones I saw screwed up the URL, though - there was one unreadable letter (you could guess it, but there were multiple possibilities).
I don't play WoW any more.

Orc warlocks here. Gold sellers are a sinister bunch.

Piccolo or D.I.S.C.O. and Baby Spice are put to great use on my server when the orc warlock bots arrive in org.
