The World Cup Thread - Football/Soccer

Postby Barathorn » Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:12 am

Ok, so its almost here. Anyone got any plans to watch some of it?

I actually think England have a chance this time round as we have a favourable group draw.

Who else do people think can win it?

FIFA site

Seeing as my guild is made up of a large number of Italians I kind of want them to be knocked out early do it doesn't affect raiding  . Same for England I guess.

Unfortunately I shall be watching some. I find watching most sports dull and in the case of football I would rather be playing it. But my friends will be watching it and I do like them and beer so will end up watching some.

From a Facebook event -

To kick off England's World Cup campaign you are hearby invited to our place for an afternoon BBQ and then football on the TV at kick-off (believe to be 19:30 - unless someone knows otherwise?)

BBQ from 15:00 onwards - bring booze and stuff to burn.

I may spend a lot of the match time in the garden looking at tortoise that likes to headbutt things/people.

Please explain what BBQ means in England, I don't believe I've ever heard those 2 words in one sentence together. =P I will also concede that American beer sucks, so please don't go there.

My traditional teams are USA, Germany, and Italy in that order.

-USA because I live here, and I'd like to see us do well to promote the sport (WTB MLS having the level of exposure as the NBA or NFL).
-Germany because it's 75% of my heritage and the country I identify most with (speak German semi-fluently, 3 out of 4 grandparents are pennsylvania dutch)
-Italy because it's the other 25% (Italian Grandmothers ftw).

But I don't usually care who wins, I just like watching good, well-played matches.

I rather enjoy watching "football" though i don't do it often. I also greatly enjoy looking at football players. :D I actually bought May's Vanity Fair for this reason...

I'm quite jealous - my boyfriend's brother is an airplane mechanic and he is going down to SA for the World Cup in case the plane his company big shots will be taking needs any repairs while they're there. Must be nice!

An Aussie friend told me they actually call it soccer too - Confirm/Deny?

Christiano Ronaldo (sp?) makes me squeamish. Too much of a "holier than tho" attitude for him to ever be attractive.

Wait nevermind, for some reason I thought that said "hotter than thou".

Same thing. He's hot shit (or so they say) and he KNOWS it. Which, as a result, makes him perfectly hideous to me.

Luckily I know nothing about these men so I can ogle with a clear conscience. Huge egos are a major turn off for me.

I know I have a couple of mexican friends who are heading out to SA to see the final, and Mexico recently beat Italy 2-1 and that's about as far as my world cup knowledge goes.
