87-year-old dies in crash at Texas Motor Speedway

DALLAS — An 87-year-old World War II veteran who eagerly anticipated a fast ride around Texas Motor Speedway died after the car he was in blew a tire and crashed into a wall at the Fort Worth track, officials said Tuesday.
...
Krusemark chose the ride-along experience as a reward for being a blood donor, Carter BloodCare spokeswoman Linda Goelzer said. Krusemark contacted the organization's event coordinator "several times to make sure he was on the list, and he was excited about coming," Goelzer said.
We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

I don't know what makes this sadder than any other meaningless random death.

To win something and then die because of it, I guess.
Also I love old people.

I'm not sure why it is sad that someone who lived a long life died in the middle of doing something that they had always dreamed of doing.

Yeah, from his perspective, you could do a lot worse.

For those left behind, though, it's more of a psychic shock when
death happens abruptly and in the middle of a happy event. "How
did Grandpa like his - ...what? Oh, no."

Exactly. It's like ... if I were old, I'd probably be more likely to try things like skydiving or flying or other comparatively high-risk activities. I have so much less to lose if I've already lived a full life.

I feel guilty that I laughed at the last bit, but you're right. It sucks for his family. For him ... I hope he got a lot of enjoyment from that trip around the track.

On the other hand, at least it wasn't a protracted illness that got him, or months of pain.

I think the article says he didn't die until two days later. So that was either two days in some sort of coma or a lot of pain in the hospital.
Something about the dying while you are really excited about something just sucks :( And that the excitement was directly related to the death. I don't know, it just seems extra morbid.

I posted it in bad taste because I found it funny.

I'd rather die in a freak speedway accident than die falling down the stairs.

I don't find it funny, but I don't find it especially tragic either...hats off to the guy!

Nothing wrong with that :V I have no problem with the posting, I just commented that I found it sad.

So would the death be considered ironic or is it just unfortunate?
It sounds like something from the Alanis Morissette song, but I remember hearing somewhere that the situations she mentions aren't real irony.

I felt worse for the family of the guy who got sucked into the Beoing 747 jet engine.

Yeah, not one of the scenarios in the song are actual examples of irony, though if the singer is unaware of that fact, it itsself constitutes irony.
