In chemical notation, ones are always suppressed. You don't write H2O1, you just write H2O. When an ion's charge is 1, you ignore it and just write the sign so ion charges look like Pt4+, Fe3+, Ca2+, Na+, Cl-, O2- and so forth. Every number gets written except the ones.

So when he was taught to dial 911, all his chemist's brain retained was the 9.

Oh my lorrrrrd. You brought back horrible memories from high school and university (chemistry was never my strong suit). I would never have jumped to that conclusion.

I'm pretty sure there's a tiny niche market in which this joke would kill. I just haven't found them yet. They probably don't get out much. :)

Chemistry is almost as fun as physics.

That was so obscure I didn't even get it until I saw your explanation. Though now that I get it, it's quite a groaner.

Almost, but not quite.

I assumed he blew the lab up when an electrical spark from the first phone button ignited the chemical residue on his unwashed hands.

Back in USSR, there was a popular science journal called "Science & Life". And another one, called "Chemistry & Life". This fact was often cited as proof that chemistry isn't science.

I tend to agree.

I found a unique compromise in the Physics vs Chemistry debate. I'm an Analytical/Physical Chemist. Works pretty well so far.
