Does it feel like the same 'pins and needles' that you get when a foot falls asleep?

If so, it sounds like something nerve-related. At any rate, you might want to get that checked out by an actual doctor.

That is what I was thinking. Nerve/circulation. I'd talk to a professional. It's probably nothing but better safe than sorry etc.

I did some google searches before I posted, and most people that have described similar experiences, have them for days/weeks/months at a time. Mine only ever last about 20 seconds. And I'd have to say it's not quite like a foot falling asleep, it's like your entire body starts itching at the same time. At one point I thought it had to do with extreme temperature changes (like my body was overheating while adjusting from coming inside after being in the cold) but I'm not so sure about that now, since when it happened yesterday, I was inside the entire time.

I'll hold off seeing a doctor just yet (I don't want it to somehow delay my leaving Germany any longer than I'm already being delayed.) Maybe I'll discuss it with someone while I'm on leave in the states.

What's in AMP Overdrive? I'm glad you asked, because whoever designed this can did a great job of making that information easily available (unlike many of the other cans, I mean, who makes an energy drink and doesn't list the mg of caffeine?) The following are mg and % of daily allowance (where applicable) per serving: Riboflavin 1.7mg/100%, Niacin 20mg/100%, Pantothenic Acid 10mg/100%, Phosphorus 20mg/2%, Taurine 148mg (this is fairly low compared to other energy drinks, but I don't seem to miss it that much), Guarana Extract 124mg, Caffeine 80mg (guarana/caffeine is a better combination than caffeine/taurine IMHO), Maltodextrin 74mg, Panax Ginseng Extract 17mg, Yerba Mate Extract 8mg (which contains caffeine, but is reported to be gentler on the stomach than other forms of caffeine. To me, the amount here is so negligible, I wouldn't expect it to make a great deal of difference).

Got this from an energy drink review website, so can't verify accuracy (the Amp website wasn't helpful.)

Looks like Niacin could have been the culprit.

When I had a energy drink overdose, I got really clammy, hot, dizzy, and shaky. Erratic breathing. My skin might have gone a bit puffy too, but it was so long ago, I can't recall all the details. It was pretty special.

Not sure I'd call it an "overdose" as I rarely, if ever, drink more than one energy drink in a day, and it's almost always spread out over at least a 2-3 hour period (most times I can go an 8 hour period on the same one.)

Energy drinks tend to be loaded with B Vitamins, particularly B6. Niacin is a B Vitamin as well. Anyhow they tend to have significantly more than your daily requirement (like thousands of times more) of B Vitamins which increase circulation among other things which helps generate that "energy" feeling. That said, they can certainly cause the sensation you are having. Cut them for awhile and see if you stopping having that feeling.

It's not so much a "cut them for awhile" since I just had the one yesterday. And the feeling is sporatic enough (maybe once every few weeks?) that I can't necessarily correlate it to energy drinks (maybe specifically to Amp, since I don't generally have this issue with the Monsters that I drink.) If there are other Niacin heavy food items, then it's possible I just eat them sporatically enough for it to cause this problem. Hopefully I'll remember the next time I drink an Amp and see if that's the possible cause.

For reference, the Monsters I drink:
Absolute Zero (most common)
Low-Carb (second most common)
M-80 (would be most common if I could find it more often)
Rehab
Regular

I will occasionally drink other flavors, but those tend to be the ones I have most often (ie. maybe 2-3 a week at my "highest" point.)

P.S. I hope I'm not sounding argumentative or defensive like an alcoholic denying he has a problem. If there are similar Niacin levels in the Monsters that there is in the Amp I drank, then I can't imagine that's the issue, or it would be a more common occurrence.

The Niacin overdose I am familiar with usually took like 200mg - 500mg to initiate and the effect usually started less than 1 hour from the overdose. Also, the body apparently can build up a short term tolerance to Niacin so that it takes more to cause the effect. If these energy drinks only have like 20mg and this has been going on intermittently for a while, then maybe it is something else.

To be fair, if you're in some kind of secure vault where you do super secret analysis, you're probably not walking all that much, or climbing steps, so you could probably just leave it in a basket outside (assuming they even let you bring it in the building).

Just started doing some Crossfit exercises recommended to me by my buddy who is a Crossfit instructor. I am normally an old school strength training junkie, doing heavy weight and low reps to build mass and cutting before summer time for beach season. Due to a recent back problem and surgery I have been out of the game for awhile and this Crossfit stuff , in conjunction with a palio diet, has got my best bud shredded in just a few months. Anyways a workout he wanted me to try out was quick, fun, and seems to be challenging for anyone who tries it. All you need for men is 1x45lb plate or 1x25lb plate for women.

The goal is to do as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes, keeping good form on all reps...

1 Round:
1. 10 Overhead weighted lunges (5 on each leg, use the 45lb plate)
2. 8 Pushups (All the way up, All the way down)
3. 6 Burpees

It looks simple but I assure you that you will be ready to vomit when your finished and covered in sweat. try it out and provide some feedback, I had a lot of fun doing it and my thighs were screaming at me from the workout.

Go to a doctor. Ask them about possible nerve and circulation issues.

Energy drinks aren't going to cause the symptoms at that low a dosage (1/day) - unless you're sensitive to one of the ingredients, and if that were the case, you'd know it already.

I'm not sure that nutritional information is reliable. You don't have to list the amount of a vitamin on a label or the amount of an ingredient. Plus even that info is "per serving" without defining what a serving is. I don't know much about AMP, but a quick glance at 5 hour energy's own site FAQ mentions that they admit it contain 8333% of the daily RDA minimum for B12 and 2000% for B6. It also mentions what it calls "Niacin Flush"...

Some people are sensitive to elevated amounts of niacin (Vitamin B3). The flushing is a result of the niacin in 5-hour ENERGY® increasing blood flow near the skin. It generally goes away in a few minutes, and you may not experience a niacin flush again. To help avoid a possible niacin flush take half a bottle or less and save the rest for later. You may want to take Decaf 5-hour ENERGY® which contains zero niacin.

Question for anyone else that uses some sort of Protein Powder substance.

Does anyone else have a problem with the Powder not fully dissolving when shaken? Just got a new brand I'm trying, it just will not fully dissolve in the milk. (No I do not have a blender yet)

If you don't have a blender, you could try using a (small) whisk or a fork. I've never mixed mine without a blender, personally, so I wouldn't know - but it stands to reason that you'd get some clumps that would be hard to break up by shaking.

I use a shaker bottle. They are really cheap and really effective. Not sure if thats what you meant by blender or you actually meant a motorized blender. I'd recommend just getting a like $5 shaker bottle.

On a different note. Has anyone ever read or heard of the book "4-hour body" by Timothy Ferris? My Weight lifting professor has done the "Slow Carb Diet" in the book and it's supposedly really effective. Essentially it's you eat whatever as long as it's glycemic index is low. This prevents spikes in blood sugar which would normally cause the release on insulin which trigger fat production. In essence you eat anything that doesn't contain a lot of sugar or something that digests quickly into glucose. You eat a lot of legumes lean protein and vegtables. No bread, pasta,or potatoes. Anything that CAN be white is off-limits. So no whole wheat pasta or bread. Also no fruit or milk. While milks glycemix index is low it has a high insulin index which means it has the same response as if your blood sugar where to spike.

One day a week you get to have a day where you can eat whatever you want in whatever quantities. In fact you pretty much need to eat stuff you aren't allowed to eat the other 6 days or your body starts to do stuff(i know very specific and scientific) it shouldn't. Eat fruit and simple carbs till your hearts content.

I don't endorse this or anything but it makes a lot of sense as to why it would work. I started this diet today we will see how it goes!

Oh hmm strange... I normally mix mine in water though.

I use Optimum Nutrition powder and don't have issues

I'm actually about to try switching to water.

I'm not lactose intolerant but I think mixing them with milk is tearing up my stomach.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "glycemic index" thing. People have been rating different foods on how healthy they are for you for a long, long time now - this just seems unnecessary and an attempt at fixing what isn't broken.

I also don't think any "diet" (and I use the word in quotes, because as long as you think of it as a "diet" rather than a "lifestyle" then it's doomed to fail) that gives you a "cheat day" is worth a rat's ass. Moderate your lifestyle, not your "diet". If you just pay attention to your body, it will tell you what you need and how much. The problem is that we've spent most of our lives (since we were infants anyway) learning to ignore what our bodies tell us, and it's ingrained. This "diet" sounds like it's propagating that mistake, and telling us to ignore our bodies for 6 days of the week; or, 86% of our lives. That's not healthy.

The only reason i call it a "diet" is because thats what most people would refer to it as. I'm on the same boat with you in agreeing it's a lifestyle change.

I don't agree with listening to our body because our body is designed to want to take in as much food as possible. Our design is to prevent starvation not prevent getting fat. We are designed to be foragers and hunters and thus not have food readily available at all times(think cavemen). Also you have no caloric restrictions or anything. Eat as much as you want as long as it's a legume a lean protein or a vegetable. From eating these 3 things you can get all the nutrients you need.

Your body will tell you when you're full, and you can judge how near/far you are from being full. That's the sign we ignore most often, partially because of portion sizes, but mostly because we were just raised that way. I know I was told "You'd better eat everything on your plate, or else!" when I was growing up.

The trick is learning how full you need to be to have enough energy without constant hunger pangs. My target is about 3/4 of the way there - that gives me all the energy I need, without hunger pangs and without the feeling of lethargy you get from overeating. Of course, I do eat well balanced meals and I keep track of them to ensure that I'm not missing anything I absolutely need, but even if I do come up short in some essential nutrient, I can generally tell by what I start to crave.
