RSS/Atom feeds

Postby guillex » Wed Apr 28, 2010 8:06 am

So, what do YOU subscribe to in terms of RSS/Atom?

I just found out ('cause I use it so often, go figure) that it's simpler than baking an apple pie to add RSS/Atom feeds to Outlook 2007.

So now, other than Stokpile (which has an Atom feed yaay!) and DLC (no Atom feed boooo!), I'm looking for things to slap into my ticker.

What's in YOUR RSS reader?

I only have 4 RSS feeds. I've found that they manage to circumvent our web filter nicely. Greedy Goblin, for example, I can view via RSS but the webpage is blocked by web filter.

That's an impressive list Flex ... it's too bad I can't get to things like the BlueTracker at work, because of the firewall...

I'll be popping a few of those into Outlook ... and possibly looking for another reader that I can use while I'm not on my work's domain.

I've added a few myself, include some stuff from NASA, and a few gold blogs.

Keep 'em coming! ATOM feeds are welcome too. :D

Do you use Google reader? Do you have access to Google reader? Google's server caches a copy of the feed to their local server and periodically updates it so you are never hitting the site directly. Additionally many desktop applications sync with Google reader so you can have a unified list across multiple computers/devices.

History time!

The RSS spec was controlled by Userland and by extension Dave Winer. A bunch of early tech-bloggers wanted a syndication format that was an accepted espandable standard so they created ATOM to replace RSS but Userland's RSS2 proved to be very popular and powerful.

More or less ATOM was created so tech bloggers could have a circle jerk.

No, right now I'm just using Outlook 2007's reader. I'll read up on Google's to see what I can do. I'd love to have a unified list, to be honest.

Eh, I just like it because it looks better than just plain text (but that's just me, and I'm cool with either!), though I haven't seen any RSS2 feeds yet.

That's all about what they decide to publish via their feed. Both ATOM and RSS2 support full HTML publishing of content within their format.

http://www.atomsandelectrons.com/blog/ serves both formats as HTML entries.

Im too lazy and busy to make them links right now, but the web addresses should be enough.

I also suggest using google reader, since it accesses the sites to pull the feeds from google's servers, it eliminates quite a few problems with firewalls.

DLC does indeed have a feed, it's http://www.darklegacycomics.com/feed.xml

Or at least, that's what my Google Reader subscription says.

My fiancee introduced me to Google Reader somewhere around 2006, I think. I can no longer live without it. I gave up following any webcomic that didn't have an RSS feed, because it was just so much more convenient to have a historical list that updates as they're posted.

Here's my ridiculously long list of feeds, sorted as I have them in Google Reader. I don't have time to linkify them all, I may go back and edit all of the feeds into this post, but most of them can be found easily enough with a google search. If anyone wants a specific link for one that's trickier to come up with, I'll be glad to provide one.

looking at the list, a lot of my comic feeds are either broken or defunct. I should really go through and double check that the ones I haven't seen in a while are still working. Some of them should still be updating.

RSS feeds are normal links who happen to be in a format useful for other software to keep pinging to see if new stuff comes. Most browsers can create RSS favorites. The RSS link is usually shown with this icon: http://www.in-control.org.uk/site/INCO/ ... 20Icon.jpg

Other applications, like outlook and google reader, can also track those and show the content in their own manner. There you usually just point the rss link too. Each application supports a bunch of similar features, so it's worth looking around.

Applications other than your browser are useful because of it's own way of displaying the contents (if you like it), and also centralizing everything together.
