On a related note to both web-comics -and- faster than light-speed communication:

Uh, I hate to break your bubble, but the earth only travels around the sun at roughly 67,000 mph, or a little under 19 miles per second.

In fact, there's nothing that can move at 93 million miles per second. For reference, the speed of light is just over 186,000 miles per second.

If you are thinking about the sun, then think about your nose, the place you are thinking about is 93 million miles distant from the place you were originally thinking of. Hence, the place you are thinking about just moved 93 million miles in a fraction of a second.

Here's a graphic:

Sun <------------ 93 million miles (give or take) ----------> Your nose
- I'm not Jesus, but I can turn water into Kool-Aid.
- A Sergeant in motion outranks an officer who doesn't know what the hell is going on.
- A demolitions specialist at a flat run outranks everybody.

...which is analogous to the wave crest movement, because in both cases there isn't any physical object moving from the first point to the second point at supraluminal velocity.

I'm sure Theck will get it if he thinks about it for a moment - he just shifted into "lecture the ignorant guy" mode before his irony detector had time to go off. :)

Yeah, I totally misread it the first time through and thought it was the earth moving 93 million miles per second. Chalk it up to me being stuck in debunker mode for this thread, I guess.

If it's any consolation, it's a pretty funny joke now that I get it. :P

Speaking of webcomics, Unixkcd is amazing.

What fun commands have you found? So far I've seen:
Code: Select all
cat
make me a sandwich (and the obvious followup)
look (and then "go west")
pwd
a/s/l
reboot
shutdown

So, in fact, does "I read the source code" (doing so optional)

Indeed, reading the JS source shows rather interesting things. It's quite clever system they've built there :)

Thread necro!

Needs more detail about that research(validity, throughness, reputability etc.)

It's valid research, it's just not very new or interesting.

"Because nobody's really thought about things that travel faster than light before, this is a wide-open technological field," Singleton said.

Yeah, nobody's done that. Except me, my research group, and the entire subfield of Slow Light research in Optics for the past 10 years. Nobody at all.
