The experience varies wildly. I know poeple that had tattoos done on their back, neck, cheek, butt, feet and so on and most of them said it "burned, but didn't really hurt". Others wanted to strangle the tattooer.

Mmm the burning sensation is so nice....
I really need mine re-inked anyway. It's been about 11 years since it was done.

I'm worried about getting it re-inked though. I don't want the skin to bump out with the addition of more ink underneath. And I have no experience with re-inking whatsoever.

Mine's on the left shoulder, which I think
is considered a low-pain spot unless you're
really skinny which I'm not.
It felt like somebody scratching me with
the end of a paperclip for 45 minutes.
Irritating but pretty easy to ignore; I
didn't fall asleep but I'm sure one could.
It's the canadian army insignia (LFC),
a maple leaf in front of crossed swords.

might as well be a bullseye."

Re: tattoo thread
While it depends a lot on individual pain tolerances (because yes, tattoos hurt - don't let anyone tell you otherwise - although the pain is pretty comparable to a sunburn), there are certain areas that really do suck. Anywhere that the skin is close to the bone, for instance, or where nerves cross close to the skin. The stomach doesn't hurt all that bad compared to places like the spine, wrist, inside of the biceps, anklebones, elbows, collarbones, ribs, armpits, etc... Another thing to consider is whether or not you're ticklish. If you're ticklish, getting a tattoo in an area that would cause you to collapse into giggle fits will quite possibly be one of the absolute worst experiences in your life.
There's a mental component too. If you go into it thinking "wow, this tattoo is going to HURT", then it will. If you go in expecting to get an endorphin rush, you do. If you go in expecting it not to hurt at all, you'll be surprised.

Re: tattoo thread

They hurt like hell when they got to my shoulder blade, but I was super skinny at the time (35lbs skinnier than I was in the picture). I am designing one to go below them in the middle now. So addicting.
