Isn't the Manx an anomaly that dies in a few years?Melathys wrote:for those that hate cats, get a comprimise. a manx. They are, by nature, more akin to dogs in their attitude towards people. My brother has one, and so does my landlord. They are very much "people" cats.
Though, I have to admit, sometimes I get reminded of their "catness". Don't get me wrong, I love cats to be, you know, cats; but my bare feet while I'm fixing breakfast is not meant for fangs and talons after the cat has stalked me and pounced, lol. But they definately get into lovey moods, and demand a lot of attention. My brothers cat would jump onto my lap and start licking my face...I try to pull away and she claws my cheeks to draw me back for more licking, lol.
found this at some website. Some owners have suggested that Manx babies need to be sold with warning labels attached. The owners know firsthand that love for the Manx can be contagious. Many times, for example, a wife drags a disinterested husband along to a cattery to see a litter of Manx kittens. The husband waits politely, obviously bored, while his wife selects a kitten. A week or two later, the Manx breeder is amused when the wife calls to complain that the husband has been charmed by the beguiling Manx kitten, and now the wife needs another kitten so she can have one too! (The Manx has been called, apparently correctly, the Man's cat that women love.) As a result, few Manx-owning households contain only one Manx.

"Manx Syndrome" is a colloquial name given to the condition which results when the mutant tailless gene shortens the spine too much. It can seriously damage the spinal cord and the nerves causing spina bifida as well as problems with the bowels, bladder, and digestion. Some only live for 3 years; the oldest recorded was 5 years when affected with the disease . In one study it was shown to affect about 20% of Manx cats, but almost all of those cases were rumpies, which exhibit the most extreme phenotype.[2] Actual occurrences of this are rare in modern examples of the breed due to informed breeding practices.[7] Most pedigreed cats are not placed until four months of age (to make sure that they are properly socialised) and this gives adequate time for any health problems to be identified.[citation needed] Renowned feline expert Roger Tabor has stated that "Only the fact that the Manx is a historic breed stops us being as critical of this dangerous gene as of other more recent selected abnormalities."[8] The breed is also predisposed to rump fold intertrigo and corneal dystrophy.[9]
The Manx breed, in spite of the absence of tail, has no problems with balance.
so basically, being manx greatly increases their chances of acquiring spina bifida which would indeed shorten their life, but with today's breeders, its a rare occurance.

One parent of my cat is a Manx.
You can't really tell in the picture except that he has HUGE feet for his size, but he has 6 toes on each foot.

Well, thank you! I'll let him know. Today he and 5 other dogs played in the local park. One of the other dogs peed on my pants.

Revive'd (is this allowed?)!
Daaaw, I remember Daeren's puppy.
So a lot has happened with my dogs (relatively) since I posted in this thread. My poor Wombat died the day after Christmas, she basically broke her back by getting too excited
My family misses her a lot.
But we found this little guy, his name is Banjo (I don't have pictures of him uploaded from when we first found him at 2 months old):

(That one is Tazzy, she doesn't play with him anymore, she is too scared because he is so much bigger than her)
I think he's slightly younger in these, he is 100% cutesauce:

I think Banjo is about 40lbs now (full grown).
Here is one of the last pictures I took of Wombat

She was my mom's (and everyone else's) favorite
Our first dog we ever had. She was only 5.

When I move out of the place I'm in, my landlord (who has 3 cats) wants me to take this one with me. He's a pretty damn cool cat. Like other manxes, you can rough house with him and he loves it. Any other cat, you rub them backwards and they hate you for life, this guy loves for you to do that.

Here is Jølle (the norwegian name for Garfields dog, Odie) resting on a planket. He IS an amazingly lazy dog.

And here is a good profile pic of him getting an ear scratch.

Hmm.... Apparently I suck at linking images...
Edit: I apparently suck even harder at figuring out pic links...

Yoshi has had a rough time. He had to shave his head to remove a bump on his forehead, and he's has some allergy but we don't know what. And some eczema on his buttocks which meant he had quite a rough time (and he got sick from pain meds +++)

We also visited his breeder who had yet another puppy litter:

Anyhow, sad to hear about Wombat. Banjo looks great, what kind of breed is it? He's so cute

I prefer cats to dogs but if I had a pick of any pet I'd have to go with a pygmy goat.

We live in a society where people born on third base constantly try to steal second, yet we expect people born with two strikes against them to hit a homerun on the first pitch.

I adopted my dog Katie about 6 months ago. She is a mini pinscher / chihuahua mix. She's friendly, energetic and very barky.
First day I brought her home.

Her winter coat my mother insisted on buying for her.

Ever vigilant, guarding the house from the back of the couch.

Snuggled up on a cold day.

She likes to crawl up underneath the throw blankets we keep on the back of the couch.

My friends and I were driving in to a backwoods town one day, stopped at a gas station, and saw a flier for "Pygmy Goats, $50". We were like "Fffffffff, we should buy our own goat!
" Sadly, we did not
@Gracerath- Awwww. Tiny dogs really do need sweaters. Wombat used to hate clothes but in the winter she refused to go outside in the morning until my mom put her sweater on her, and then she would fight with her if my mom tried to take it off afterward. It's nice to find someone else that doesn't mind small yappy dogs. Mine bark a lot too, but Banjo doesn't bark at all for some reason (I think some of my family members have heard him bark once or twice, they say it's a very scary sounding bark).
