Just finished Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

I'm impressed. Many people argue it's the best show of the season, and I tend to agree.

I don't like the entire Magical Girl genre -- it gives me the creeps. The story here is so strong it manages to obviate that for me -- the "pretty shiny magical girl" isn't really the focus of the story -- it is the cost and burden of that power, and the inevitable outcome in an entropic, zero-sum universe. This is a grittier universe; in the second episode there is some German graffiti on a building. It is a Faust reference. This is significant.

They subvert many, many tropes and create a number of characters it is difficult to categorize as "good" or "evil." The ending is a little unsatisfactory but logical in character and context. The world and universe is internally consistent, even if it is warped at some points, and some things don't stand the refrigerator test. I couldn't stand the character of Madoka for pretty much the entire series, but I don't think the show is really about her, even if she is the titular character.

The artwork fluctuates between amazing and horrible; I don't like the character designs at all. I wish they moved the age bracket up a few years, but there is a very specific and insidious reason girls this age are used.

But still. If you like good anime but are avoiding this because it's a Magical Girl show, give it a shot. Watch the first three episodes at least. I would classify this as a Drama/Horror/Tragedy, so if that's not your cup of tea either ...

Despite everything said, the real protagonist is Homura.

I haven't managed to convince myself to watch Madoka yet... however I did recently download Durararararararararara!!!!! (lol) so probably going to watch that soon.

Recently finished Eden of the East (11 tv eps + 2 movies). I highly recommend it.

Episode 3 is the make or break episode. If you don't like Episode 3, then Madoka is not a series for you, if you do like it, then you will enjoy the rest of the series.

I know it was for me, and I know several other people that were having doubts regarding Madoka till they got to see Episode 3. Most of them loved the series from then on, the ones that didn't also pointed out Episode 3 as the reason why they moved away from the series.

The show's setting and goals resonate fairly closely with things like Evangelion and, as someone here said, what would happen if the magical girls fought EVIL stuff instead of stuff-that-needs-a-hug.
Episode 1 marks for its weird animation. 2 is the blandest as it's all to set up for 3, which is a reality check.

Well, I always thought of Madoka as the Bokurano of the magical girl genre -- which makes me wonder if we will soon see the Gurren Lagann of the magical girl genre

I don't know Bokurano so I can't relate :/

Dunno when something will reach Lagann's level of both over-topness and scale. Can't really beat galaxy shuriken.

Well Bokurano is so soul-crushingly depressing that makes all that the guys from evangelion went thru seem like a walk in the park.

Granted, Madoka ends on a higher note than Bokurano, but both are still some of the best deconstructions of their respective genre.

I see. I guess I don't have to fear a replay of Saikano for Madoka. Sad may be good, but I have my limits.

Madoka's ending is relatively "happy." It is a net positive for the universe and most of the characters, but it is still a zero-sum universe and prices must be paid. Whether or not the price is really "sad" is ripe for debate. It's a hopeful end, though.

Saikano is just kind of soul crushing and nihilistic.

I watched Eden and the first movie and it really never came together for me; does the second movie pull it together?

It probably doesn't help that I have little patience with the Japanese conceit of nebulously "saving X." Maybe it would help if I mentally translated it as "redeem" instead.

Magical girl is a genre I usually don't go for, but oh man if someone did a magical girl show with TTGL's awesomeness I would watch it.

Well, it certainly ends the story, that's for sure. Whether or not that does it for you is yet to be seen I guess!

I watched the series, but haven't seen the OVAs - the last episode ended it rather nicely, I thought.

It was a nice ending. The "bad guys" got beaten (when they moved the operator and sent the empty champagne bottle), and the good guy made the best decision ever.

That last line was one hell of a note to leave off the whole thing on! Now that I know the OVAs exist, I'll have to watch them - but I have to admit, I'm kind of worried. It's rare that an anime series (for me at least) ends on anything less than a head-scratching WTF moment, and Eden managed to tell the entire story of the protagonist(s?) quite nicely.

Now, I could see an OVA about the supporter hunting down the losing selecao, but the main plot arc was tied up neatly with a pink bow on it.

:/

I dunno I mean I agree that it was an ending I just don't think I could accept it as the ending. If you see what I'm getting at here. Like the plot was left largely unresolved even if you could say that the characters' roles in it were.

I read the wiki page on the OVAs, and apparently it's still about the same characters from the series - that plotline (for me) was resolved at the end of the series. I think it would've been better if the OVAs were about the supporter hunting down the selecaos that "lost" the game - with maybe a side-note (or a news snippet) about Takizawa actually getting crowned prince of Japan and marrying what's-her-name.

It is about the characters, I was just saying you COULD make the argument that their story was done at the end of the Tv series. I wouldn't agree with it, but I could see it.

I think what actually happened in the movies, keeping the investment in the existing characters that they had been building, was better. But I won't say more than that, just that you should go watch them.

Not quite related to the new anime season.

But God, being part of the anime scene makes you feel old fast. I helped run Fanime this weekend and realized that I've been staffing conventions longer than 50% of the attendees have been alive. :/

On the plus side, one of the Macross Frontier key animators stuck his tongue down my (male) friend's throat, and pictures exist. So I figure I can get some sketches out of that one.

haha, that is definitely something me and my friends comment on at Otakon every year. Like
"Oh snap that is a nice costume"
"yeah a nice costume that will send you straight to jail"
" :( "
