Can towering infernals crit?
Well today we're going to be starting attempts on anetheron and we have 2 tanks with there fr built up, but none of us are sure if they need any certain amount of defence to tank infernals.
Anyone know?

yeah they can crit, but their melee attack is ~1.5k-2.5k on plate, that would mean a 4-5k hit or so (depending on gear). But compare that to the 2.5k fire aura which ticks almost every second (unmitigated).
Either go berserk with defense, or gem for resilience and get items for that. both reduce crit chance (resilience by a lot more)

I was recently crit twice in one battle. It's unnerving to hear the sound your toon makes when you get crit but it's not too big a deal. I think as someone above said they were in the 4k ballpark.

I split the diffrence. I take the defense to about 470, FR to 300 with the aura. I get crit on sometimes, but the fire damage is laughable. And since after 20% they dont kill infernals, they just bomb the boss and I'l left holding any remains I needed the balance.
And this is why teenage girls shouldn't play WoW...

Tanked'em a few times in no FR gear at all just the 70 from the aura with 1 healer.
Wasn't safe but wasn't too insane it was undoable.

tanked them on our 1st kill last Friday with 278 FR and 494 defense, Scarab of Displacement (sp?) is a great trinket for resist fights. Anyways had 2 healers on me but was taking so little damage 1,800 fire damage of 3,500-4,000 at worst and melee hits were around the 2,000 mark, that I will suggest to the RL only the 1 healer on me this week.

The idea is, you don't need FR if you are tanking 1 by 1.
If for any reason you have to tank more than 1, then FR is king.

I would think even tanking 1 each time wearing a bit of FR would help out the healers.

Rather it's a question of how lazy are you? If your tanking infernals why not mitigate a big chunk of incoming damage to make life easier for the healer? It's just one click of a button to swap into FR gear while the boss is running down the hill before he reaches the base (that is if you are using an outfit changing addon)

Not really. I tank them in 332 every week and have yet to run out of mana. Not once have I had to use JoW or pop a mana pot. They do enough dmg in high FR and you have enough downtime in between to keep your mana at a decent level the whole time.
