Eanin's Failsafe Guide Discussion Thread

Hi, everyone. I've decided it would be a good idea to create a gearing guide similar to the one I created for TBC. Times have changed. Uncrushability is a thing of the past. Instances are easier. However, some things never change. Players like me (and maybe you!) want to gear up for heroic and 10-man content as quickly as possible and don't want to rely on luck. We ground out gold from those dailies for a reason, darn it, and want to be in Naxx within a week or two of hitting eighty without cursing the loot gods.

This guide is going to be a little different from the old guide. I will be including two-phases. The first is the stuff to spend your hard-earned cash on so you can get into the heroics and start grabbing badges, orbs and rep. The second is the stuff to spend your hard earned badges, orbs and rep on so you can get into raids. Basically, think of phase 1 as being your heroic gearing guide and phase 2 as being your raid gearing guide. Of course, if you're very, very rich, feel free to craft up those epics before you set foot in an heroic.

Note that unfortunately, being block capped is simply impossible without drops. I have, however, noted the four items that have block rating on them.

Head:
Phase 1:
Tempered Saronite Helm (Crafted) or
The Crusader's Resolution (Quest: The Crusaders' Pinnacle)
Phase 2:
Tempered Titansteel Helm (Crafted) or
Armored Titanium Goggles (Crafted Eng Only)

Enchant:
Phase 1:
Arcanum of the Defender (KoT revered)
Phase 2:
Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector (AC revered)

Neck:
Phase 1:
Reinforced Titanium Neckguard (Quest:The Admiral Revealed) or
Burning Skull Pendant (BoE Drop)
Phase 2:
Titanium Earthguard Chain (Crafted)
Chained Military Gorget (25 EoH)

Shoulders:
Phase 1:
Tempered Saronite Shoulders (Crafted) or
Crusader's Square Pauldrons (BoE drop)
Phase 2:
Wapach's Shoulders of Solidarity (BoE Drop. Only if you're really rich or lucky; otherwise, the Crusader's are fine, but grind your SoH rep to exalted for the inscription)

Enchant:
Phase 1:
Greater Inscription of the Knight (Scryers Exalted) or
Greater Inscription of Warding (Aldor Exalted) or
Lesser Inscription of the Pinnacle (SoH Honored)
Master's Inscription of the Pinnacle (Inscription Only)
Phase 2:
Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle (SoH Exalted)

Back:
Phase 1:
Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions (WA Honored) or
Tattered Castle Drape (BoE Drop)
Phase 2:
Durable Nerub-Hide Cape (Crafted)

Mighty Armor or
Titanweave
(if these are a little pricey, try Superior Agility or Steelweave for your phase 1 cloak)

Chest:
Phase 1:
Silver-Plated Battlechest (Quest: Junk in my Trunk)
Phase 2:
Breastplate of the Solemn Council (WA Revered) or
Heroes' Redemption Breastplate (47/53 BR) (80 EoH)

Enchants:
Powerful Stats or
Super Health or
Greater Defense

Wrists:
Phase 1:
Tempered Saronite Bracers or
Bracers of Reverance (Quest: A Wing and a Prayer)
Phase 2:
Bracers of Dalaran's Parapets (BoE EoV item. These are starting to be available on my server for 5k. Of course, feel free to skip these unless you're very wealthy)

Fur Lining - Stamina (LW Only)

Hands:

Daunting Handguards (Crafted) or
Refined Ore Gloves (33 BR) (BoE drop)

(As in TBC, there really aren't many starting trinkets available. You may be stuck with your TBC trinkets for a bit)

Sonic Booster (Crafted Eng only)
Phase 2:
Valor Medal of the First War (40 EoH)
Darkmoon Card: Greatness (Quest: Nobles Deck. The Strength version is an incredible threat and mitigation trinket)

I hope you've enjoyed my failsafe guide, redux. I'm welcome to any suggestions or advice on items I may have missed, but I guarantee that if you follow this guide, you'll be tanking heroics, 10-mans and even 25-man Naxx in only a couple of weeks.

I like the multi phase approach as well. Having not seen your guide for the xpac yet, I made a quick one of my own, and I'm glad to see a lot of crossover. Makes me feel like I may actually be learning what's going on with gear now

That said, for phase 1 belt, you have "Waistguard of the Living Knight (BoE) " listed. Is this supposed to be "Waistguard of the Risen Knight" ?

The point of the failsafe guide is it's gear that's 100% attainable first time. So quest/rep rewards and craftable items.

Just as a thought, how difficult would it be to add the 'Block Cap' % ratings to each of those items, so people can see which item gives what?

Just a thought? Might enable people to mix and match a little easier if everyone added the 'Block Cap' % rating to their Gear Guides?

The problem is everything except block % is affected by diminishing returns. You stack too much dodge, it's worth less, ditto parry, agility and the defense contribution to dodge/parry/miss.

Yeah I had completely forgotten about that Ulushnar , thanks for the reminder. It's very frustrating now, in TBC we just had that one list along with Eanin's guide and away you went. Now it is far from easy.

Scratch my idea, must be a Monday *grins*.
