How to Search for Upgrades and Link Items!
For many people, this forum is used to ask which pieces of gear would help to upgrade which slot. Although this is clearly a valid use of the forum, such questions take time to ask and to answer, and the answers can often be found without the need to ask for outside help, using this site:
http://www.wowhead.com
Wowhead is a World of Warcraft database. Put simply, it has a record of every item in the game (pretty much), along with user-generated comments and screenshots. Using this, it is possible to look for upgrades for oneself, without needing to post on here and wait for an answer. So how does one do this? Well, the main page of Wowhead looks like this:
From this page, you need the "Database" option, which I've pointed out with a massive Pink arrow. Mouse over this, then over "Items" then "Weapons" (if you want to look at Weapons) or "Armor" (if you want to look at Armour). If you're looking for Armour, you should then click on "Plate" followed by the type of Armour you're looking for - if you're looking for weapons, you don't need to. Once you reach this page, you'll be looking at all the items of one type. While this is useful, there are between several hundred and several thousand choices for each slot. To narrow this down, you need to create a filter. The option to do this is shown here (highlighted once again by the giant pink arrow of doom):
Once you click this button, you will see several drop down boxes. The ones you are interested in are "Level" (set between a few either side of your current level, or to 78+ if 80 (80 if looking for Epic upgrades)) and the bottom, unlabelled, box. When you click this, it opens a drop-down menu. Scroll down this, and select the top five options under "Defensive Stats". Then change the circles from "All filters" to "At least one". Finally, click "Apply Filter" and enjoy your list of gear!

Of additional note: all the tanking plate gear has defense on it. So if you are looking for that, then you can see all the plate together.
Rings, neck, weapon, and cloaks are trickier. In general, they always have defense or dodge on them. All of the rings have strength, but filtering with strength will include some non-tank rings.

Wowhead is a great site and I use it all the time. Not only for gear but for quests and recipies as well. However..........
There is one other site that has a GREAT fearture...
http://wow.allakhazam.com
Once you have registered with the site (free of course), you can import your character directly from the armory and "pin" your character.
You will then be able to, under a tab with your toons name --> find upgrades.
You are able to search all, (awesome page with tabs for different slots) or just a specific slot. All the items are linked directly to wowhead so you can go read up on where they drop, etc.
Will post screenies tomorrow as my work has blocked most of the pages related to wow

You could go suggest that on their site. Decent Idea though.Fathammer wrote:My question is why hasn't WowHead done the link stuff for NPCs? They could give location and stuff similar to the in game tool tip.
I don't think it's the correct choice to guide paladins on Maintankadin to make poor choices just because everyone else makes poor choices. -Digren

There is a mod für phpBB-Boards which uses the tag [item][/item] to link wowhead.com items. It also colors them correct.

This forum does not support that function. That is why it was not listed.

Re: How to Search for Upgrades and Link Items
Just thought i would share with you guys that i am using this as my Paladin Tank loot ranking.
http://www.lootrank.com/wr.asp?Cla=2&Ma ... &t32=37220
I use it as a general reference to know whats an upgrade or not. I don't expect people to completely agree with the rankings, but it's a good reference
I also use Wowhead to find out more about the item pros/cons, but i mostly use lootrank.

It's worth mentioning also, imo.Moogle Stiltzkin wrote:Just thought i would share with you guys that i am using this as my Paladin Tank loot ranking.

Of course, even with perfect stat weights of your choices you'll rarely end up using every single item it lists as the best for several reasons, but it's nice to give a good idea about items that are out there and worth mentioning. Ofc you can find these on wowhead(and there's also this feature to rank items with your stat values, better in some ways, worsei n other i say), but i like the way i can sort these items here, and i gotta admit, i strongly consider the list at the very bottom when I needa decide if i shall take an item or if it's a bigger upgrade for some of our other tanks.
I change these ratings there with about every other upgrade i get, when i see what stats need to be worked on next, so posting some rankings here would not really fit here and would be rather offtopic maybe.

Re: How to Search for Upgrades and Link Items
The loot ranking needs a weighting for str.
As you have BV worth 25, the Str would be 14.375 before taking into account threat, which you have done with hit.

Is Thottbot not used anymore? I use it still cuz its what im used to, but doesnt Atlas loot let you link just about any drop there is and what not, as well as tell you what boss drops what and the drop rate?

Re: How to Search for Upgrades and Link Items
Atlas-loot does indeed to that, but it´s a very awkward way of finding upgrades for specific slots. Also, it can only let you link stuff that has already been discovered on your server (right-click an item, then another item), so for most of us, not everything is available.
Dunno if thottbot has it, but on wowhead you can generate an item-link directly, which lets you bypass the need of the item being discovered in the first place. Sometimes boots you off, though :(
I´m not a fan of thottbot. The format just isn´t as clean as wowhead, not to mention how much better the search-function on wowhead is (drop-down list as you go).
