Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
My guild has not been able to down 10-man Algalon and only a few members of our guild have done Yogg+0. It was requested by a small core of the guild (our group has 10-man ToGC on farm) that I come tank in Ulduar and eventually be a part of the hopeful and eventual Algalon kill as it will help our guild get new recruits (this kill would make us the #2/#3 horde guild on the server which makes us look good to recruits).
However, they wanted to do it on a non-raid night (Sunday). The one thing I enjoy about the guild I'm in is that we raid on nights where I otherwise wouldn't be doing anything (except exercise and WoW is more enjoyable than that.) Our guild doesn't actively raid on weekends, usually only Tuesday-Thursday and occasionally on Monday to finish up content we didn't get the week before.
So I'm in a bind. Raiding in Ulduar on my main just isn't fun for me anymore. I agree to do just about any raid on a scheduled raiding night with my main but doing a raid that isn't fun for me on a non-raid night depresses me. It also makes me feel bad since everyone else wants to do it and wants me to do it and I don't want to do it.
I'm willing to bring an alt to Ulduar, even if it's just for badges, but I can't find any incentive for me to play my main in Ulduar (other than the sense of accomplishment, achievements, yada yada).
I guess what I'm asking for is if I'm doing the right thing or should I just give up my weekend for the good of the guild?

Sounds like you found one to me.
It's a game. It's for fun. You want to do stuff like Algalon but can't be bothered with clearing up to him? Fine, say you don't want to go.
If you DO want to go do stuff like Algalon, then go! You say you're giving up your weekends - do you normally do stuff? Just tell them, "I'll come but I usually do stuff on the weekends so I may not be able to stay forever/come some weeks. If you're OK with that I'm ok with coming." Most people have no problem understanding that RL comes first.

If you want to do Algalon but the reason you don't want to go on the run is the stuff before him, just say so. Maybe someone would be wiling to switch with you for the rest of the instance. You bring an to heal/DPS and they bring an alt to tank. When you get to Algalon, switch to your mains. Or someone could bring an alt tank then leave for Algalon to let you come in instead of alternating toons with you.

Tuesday maintenance is merely a setback!

And right here is the reason I haven't been a raider with a guild since pre-wrath...
I hate having that feeling that I MUST get on a play WoW... if I want to get on - I do - if I don't feel like playing - I Don't - no one making me feel guilty about not being there to raid something
One thing I very much don't miss about raiding...
In my opinon - if you don't want to run the content - and it's on an off-night - then tell them you don't want to. It's just a matter of understanding why you don't want to go - but in the end - it's your characters and they can't make you go to something you don't want to.
If you are only willing to take an alt - then tell them this - allowing them to have the decision to either invite your alt, or to not take you to the raid.
If you just plain don't want to run the place (main or alt) then tell them this - and they should be able to respect that with it not being a scheduled night - you are choosing to do other things.

Sunday Night isn't the weekend anyway, really. It's at best the time you use to prep for Monday.

Re: Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
I don't want to do Algalon either. Killing Algalon is a big deal to the guild leader which is why I was willing to do him only as I'm one of the 2 best geared tanks in the guild.
It used to be where I'd want to do anything and everything on my Prot. Pally. Run old content (and I mean old like BC or vanilla), do dailies solely for cash (even though exalted), or grind heroics for badges. But now, I mostly just want to do any version of ToC and Ony. My guild does every version of ToC, except 25-man ToGC and both version of Ony so I'm gaining 51 badges per week.
Right now, the thing that excites me is leveling my alts up to 80 and getting them some nice shiny purples (Feral druids, cats, are really fun!).

Algalon is one of the most visually stunning fights in the game, and anyone capable of downing him should try. It's only 1 hour of your week.

Re: Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
it comes down to what do YOU want to do?
if you want to be part of an amazing fight (so im told) and get an achievement, then go
if not, then dont
any REASONABLE guild would understand and WANT RL to come first. I know my guild is mostly a bunch of friends, adn the main reason we dont raid very much is because it takes us a month to get everyones schedules!
I feel the same way, i hate feeling like i have to log in and play, i want the GAME to be fun.
if raiding old content (for you anyway) is fun and enjoyable (doesnt look like it from your post) then go for it, if not then as i said before, dont
All i am going to say is remember it is a game and supposed to be fun, not a job you pay to do. Do wats enjoyable to you, and wat makes you happy.

Heh, i wish the "I cba doing this fight i wont come" applied to me.
Sadly being the Main Tank also brings responsibility. When people usually trust you and rely on you, you can't really tell them no "cause you cba".

Re: Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
Let me ask this...
Is the the GM that wants this, or is it the whole guild? I'm in a situation where the GM is a hard-core achievement junkie, and he is always pushing for Algalon, but most of the rest of the guild couldn't be bothered. I'd like to do it, but, I'm tired of the GM laying on guilt trips where most of the guild isn't into doing it.
So it's a matter of priorities. If it's so important, it should happen on a regular raid night. Not on a night you have reserved for RL.

I personally would just say "sure, as soon as you start paying for my subscription I'll play like you want. Before that I do what I like". Though it's probably just me. I know that screwing other people isn't nice but I hate boosting people more than that. I play the game to have fun, not to make it fun for others.Worldie wrote:Sadly being the Main Tank also brings responsibility. Re: Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
You guys are missing the point, from the OP's various responses it is clear that he is just more interested in the more shiny purples of toc/htoc as well as triumph emblems. Ilvl 226 loot from Algalon is obviously not as great a motivating factor.
OP, be honest, know what you truly want. You wouldn't have wanted to do Algalon even if it was scheduled on a raiding night.
As a tank, know that you are generally a role that is limited in number and also one that is nigh indispensable because dps and healers generally prefer to stick with what they are familiar with. I hate doing FL4 personally and I think learning yogg0 is a waste of time at this stage but I still dutifully clear through the whole of Ulduar because the other 9 people are counting on me. If you put toc and lvling your alts on a higher priority by all means, people will just find a new go-to tank eventually.

Tell them to find a new tank for fights that don't drop gear you need, since you can't be counted on to waste your time for no gear.

Re: Guild wants me to do content I don't want to do
The problem comes when you start to work as a team. They help you with your stuff, you help them with their stuff, and you are all better off as a whole. In general, everyone will think they're getting the short end of the stick.
Right now I end up doing raid every week when I'd rather be sleeping because the guild has come to rely on me. I'm the raid leader and organizer, so if I'm not there 9 other people get disappointed with their evening.
The problem is, you can't just take the parts you want. If you're going to get into a role for a group, you have to be committed to take care of all parts of that, not just going to the bosses that drop the loot you want.
Just imagine if everyone only went to fights with bosses that drop loot they need. You'd quickly be lacking a raid because 80% of the group would disappear for each fight.
So you could say you don't want to go, and try to find them another tank (maybe from another guild?) or suck it up and go. And I like the idea mentioned before about doing alts for most of ulduar, but going to mains for the hard parts.

To do Algalon you have to clear 2 bosses - FL and XT. After that you have 1 hour to clear Algalon, thus meaning the run will be over before 2 hours are over. If that's too much time on a Sunday then see if they're willing to re-schedule it for sometime before/after a raid.
